چکیده

background : periodontal disease is a common oral disease, which oxidative stress plays an important role in its pathogenesis. the onset and progress of this disease is influenced by balance between oral biofilm and host response. regarding with the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease and reduction of total antioxidant capacity in patients with periodontal disease, it is suggested that a sufficient dietary intake of antioxidants would be beneficial in the treatment of these patients.the aim of this review article was to evaluate the role of dietary antioxidants in periodontal diseases methods: the literature review has been performed in the database pubmed, google scholar and iranmedex from 1991 until 2013.after studying of 60 articles, fulltext of 30 articles were assessed. findings: assayed studies indicated that dietary antioxidants including vitamin c, vitamin e, carotenoids (a and b –carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin and zeoxanthin ) and polyphenols (proanthocyanidin , flavonoids ) have an important role in protection against oxidative stress in periodontal disease. conclusion: based of the finding of this review study, it can be concluded that dietary antioxidants can be efficient in the prevention and treatment of patients with periodontitis. key words: antioxidant, periodontal disease, oxidative stress

Dietary antioxidants and cardiovascular disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW Oxidative damage is involved in cardiovascular diseases. Intervention with alpha-tocopherol, ascorbic acid and beta-carotene does not appear to reduce pathogenesis. The purpose of this review is to describe alternative antioxidant mechanisms that may be involved. RECENT FINDINGS Antioxidants with different chemical properties may recharge each other in an antioxidant network...

Salivary antioxidants and periodontal disease status.

Periodontal disease is a common chronic adult condition. The bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis has been implicated in the aetiology of this disease, which causes destruction of the connective tissue and bone around the root area of the tooth. It has been observed that invading P. gingivalis bacteria trigger the release of cytokines such as interleukin 8 and tumour necrosis factor a, leading to...

OBJECTIVE To investigate the longitudinal relationship between the intake of dietary antioxidants and periodontal disease in community-dwelling older Japanese. DESIGN A retrospective cohort study, with a follow-up of 2 years (2003-2005). Intakes of dietary antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E, α-carotene and β-carotene) were assessed with a validated FFQ. Participants were classified by tertile...

Dietary antioxidants and exercise.

Muscular exercise promotes the production of radicals and other reactive oxygen species in the working muscle. Growing evidence indicates that reactive oxygen species are responsible for exercise-induced protein oxidation and contribute to muscle fatigue. To protect against exercise-induced oxidative injury, muscle cells contain complex endogenous cellular defence mechanisms (enzymatic and non-...

The Association between Dietary Intake of Antioxidants and Ocular Disease

To assess the association between dietary antioxidant intake and the incidence of the three major oxidative stress-related eye diseases, cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration, 78 cases from the University of Auckland Optometry and Vision Science clinic and 149 controls were recruited. Participants completed an antioxidant food-frequency questionnaire, analysed through multip...
